Can I use regular exterior paint?
No!
Use roof paint instead of normal paint , or exterior paint.
Roof paints that are specially formulated will prevent UV rays from causing the paint to deteriorate.
You should expect a 15-year warranty for a roof which has never been painted. You can expect a 10-year warranty if the roof has previously been painted and maintained by moss treatment.
You cannot guarantee the substrate, which is the structure supporting the roof. This is similar to the roofing support system.
If you don’t take care of your roof, and it starts to deteriorate or flake, then your roof painter won’t be able guarantee that the paint you are about to apply will adhere, as the substrate could fall off. Please contact our team if you have any questions.
The most important step in painting is preparation.
The preparation is essential for any painting job, even on your roof.
Always treat the roof before water blasting. You should ensure that your roof painter uses a high-pressure water blaster when water blasting. This is because guarantees are only valid if a water blaster with a pressure of 5000 PSI is used.
Your preparation will be insufficient if your tradesman is on your rooftop with a wire brush and a garden hose.
Acrylic galvanised iron primer can be used for iron roofs. You should then apply two coats of roof paint.
You may choose the oil-based primer for roofs that are badly rusted. It is stronger and protects the roof better. This is a more expensive option, but it is worth it if you have a roof in poor condition.
The process for concrete tile roofs is to seal the tile first, then apply a basecoat, which is high-density paint that fills in any porousness. This is followed by two topcoats. This is four coats total.
How many top coats do you need?
You may require a third top coat depending on how well the paint has covered.

In general, your paint comes with a guarantee. Aalto offers a warranty of 10 or 15 years depending on your application and whether it is applied by a QRC-certified Aalto installer.
Should you paint your roof by hand?
Although most roofs are able to be hand-painted or sprayed with a paint spray, a hand-painted roof will appear uneven and won’t shine as brightly.
We wouldn’t recommend this method for a new home or if you are looking for a high-quality finish.
You could paint a kiwi holiday home or bach with a roller if the appearance is not as important. If you maintain it with regular moss treatment and keep it clean, the paint will last for 15 years. Keep leaves off your roof and away from the gutters.
It is important to keep in mind that the type and amount of preparation required BEFORE applying the top coats will depend on the condition of the roof.
